Your brakes are one of the most important components when it comes to your safety on the road. Defective brakes are responsible for around 22% of all car accidents caused by a vehicle issue, despite the fact that many garages – including Harratts Renault Approved Service Centres – offer a free brake safety check.

People often report a spongy feeling when they apply the brakes, or complain about strange grinding noises. This could be a sign that the brakes are beginning to fail. If you find that your brakes take longer to stop you should get them seen by a technician as soon as possible.

Getting a problem diagnosed early can stop the brake pads from wearing completely to the disc, preventing total brake failure and keeping you safe on the road.

At Harratts Renault Approved Service Centres we can throw in a free brake check with any servicing, repair, MOT or warranty work. We’ll take a look at how thick the brake disc is and check whether it meets minimum Renault standards. For total peace of mind we’ll also inspect your brake fluid and handbrake cables.

Common Brake Issues

And What Causes Them

Brake problems can be caused by a number of faults, and an accurate diagnosis is essential.

THERE’S A SQUEALING NOISE WHEN I BRAKE

There might be a build-up of brake dust on the surface, or your brake pad could be worn down significantly. Get it checked out.

THE CAR JOLTS WHEN I BRAKE

This is probably due to a worn or distorted brake disk, something that won’t get better on its own.

MY BRAKE DISCS/PADS ARE BELOW MINIMUM THICKNESS

As a brake disc loses width it can no longer absorb heat sufficiently, impacting on the safety and braking ability of the whole vehicle (sometime referred to as ‘scoring’). Even if you replace faulty brake pads on a scorn disc they won’t last particularly long.

Never drive a vehicle with discs or pads which are below the minimum Renault thickness.

My Brake Fluid Needs Changing But My Brakes Work Fine

With all the friction and compression, connecting parts of the brake can become extremely hot and the brake fluid heats up. Although the fluid itself contains no water, moisture is pulled naturally into the system over time which seeps into the fluid. That reduces the boiling point of the fluid significantly – resulting in the emission of steam during braking, reducing efficiency and increasing brake times.

Replacing the fluid regularly eliminates this moisture and extends the lift of the entire braking system.

BRAKE FLUID CHANGE AT HARRATTS RENAULT

Brake fluid is often the cause of a number of brake faults. These can be costly to repair, but most importantly they reduce braking efficiency and ultimately make you less safe on the road.

Every time you apply the brakes, your brake fluid helps to press the brake pads firmly against the disc and slow the car down. There’s no water in the fluid, which makes it resistant to the extreme heat which is produced by the friction of the various brake components.

There’s humidity in the air, however, and over time the brake fluid will begin to absorb water. Once the water level in the fluid goes over 3.5% it’s likely to boil during braking, reducing the ability of the pads to grip firmly to the disc. That reduces braking efficiency and if left unchecked could have serious consequences.

Harratts Renault recommend a brake fluid change every 4 years, but you can pop in any time for a free brake check if you’re concerned about something.

There are many different types of brake fluid. Mixing them or using the wrong type of fluid for a Renault car could cause more damage and a fluid change must therefore only be carried out by a trained technician.

Harratts Renault offer a brake fluid check and change for a fixed price of just £65.
