WHAT IS A CAMBELT – AND WHY DOES IT NEED TO BE CHANGED?
It’s one of the most important pieces of kit in your car. Without a fully functioning cambelt you’re looking at total engine failure – and a hefty repair bill.
The cambelt controls the vital internal parts of the engine, like the valves, crankshaft and camshaft, making sure they all work in perfect sync with one another.
With such an important role to play, the cambelt needs to be durable. It’s fabricated from a rubber-based polymer and then fortified with nylon and fibreglass – that makes it pretty reliable and long-lasting.
Like any moving part, though, a timing belt can suffer from usage wear and tear over time and begin to lose some of its functionality. The belt can slip if it loses grip, placing more pressure on other parts of the engine and potentially leading to a total malfunction.
It’s hard to know when a cambelt is beginning to malfunction – by the time you notice anything, it’s probably too late. You might hear an abnormal engine sound or feel some clunkiness during acceleration, but most people won’t know about the fault until the engine fails.
That’s why it’s vital to get your cambelt changed based on the age and mileage of your Renault.

Cambelt Change at Harratts Renault
Nobody wants to be going back and forth to the garage every 5 minutes. That’s why we recommend that you replace the water pump – located just behind the cambelt – at the same time as the roller pulleys and tensioner of the belt itself. That could save you a lot of time and money on repairs in future.
The cambelt replacement procedure itself takes up to 4 hours. We replace everything at a fixed price using genuine Renault tools and parts. That includes the replacement of the belt, pulleys, tensioner and water pump.
