How often do I need an MOT on my Renault car or van?
The majority of new Renault vehicles need an MOT after 3 years. It must be performed at an approved MOT test centre, otherwise it won’t be valid. After that you need to renew the test each year, and it must be carried out at least 28 days before the existing test certificate is due to expire.
What happens during an MOT test?
The test is designed to make sure your car is in line with various safety and environmental regulations.
We take a look at all the key components of the vehicle – like tyres, brakes, lights, wipers and mirrors – to make sure they meet minimum legal requirements. We’ll also make sure that your dashboard warning lights aren’t flashing.
I've got an MOT certificate, does that mean my car is safe?
The MOT certificate confirms that the car meets the minimum legal requirements for road safety and environmental standards at the time of the test, without dismantling the vehicle.
It’s not a guarantee that the car is in good mechanical condition, though, and it doesn’t mean that you car will be roadworthy until the certificate expires. An MOT doesn’t look at the state of the engine, the gearbox, or the clutch.
How can I make sure my car is roadworthy after an MOT?
A comprehensive Vehicle Health Check alongside your MOT is the only way of ensuring your car is in the best possible condition, and the only way you’ll get peace of mind out on the road.
That’s why Harratts Renault Approved Service Centres offer a Vehicle Health Check at no extra cost once the MOT test is completed. We’ll look for any possible leaks, check on the tyre tread depth and let you know about any general maintenance work which might be required.
What happens if my car fails its MOT?
We’ll provide you with a ‘notification of failure, which will be saved in the central MOT database.
Even if it fails the MOT, you’re still legally allowed to drive your car if the existing certificate is still valid – but only if its roadworthy. If not, you run the risk of being prosecuted if you’re stopped by police, not to mention the risks an unroadworthy car poses to yourself and other motorists.
If your car fails the MOT and the certificate has expired, you’re only permitted to drive it a prearranged repair appointment at a garage or to another MOT test appointment.
